Starting small..
Children's TV programmes, along with storybooks, provide early heroes
Dennis started life in the Beano comic over 50 years ago
'Loony Toons' characters were slightly edgier than their Disney counterparts
Andy & co. were one of the 'Watch With Mother' programmes of the 50's/60's. Others were 'Rag,Tag & Bobtail', 'The Woodentops' & 'Tales of the Riverbank'. They were succeeded by the likes of Teletubbies, Camberwick Green, Trumpton and Postman Pat (below)
The Flintstones, one of the first colour cartoons, provided entertainment for all ages.
Orville was one of Children's Televion characters. Some even had chart hits.
Thunderbirds and their predecessors Supercar and Fireball XL% provided examples of early action series' for kidsof all ages.
A later generation of Children's programmes bought us Pat, The Canglers, the Wombles and the Night Garden characters.

Storybook & Pantomime
Aside from television and, increasingly, online media, storybooks still provide plenty of Heroes and Villains. Pantomime adaptations of popular stories, with the interactive nature of the performance, allow children get their first chance to cheer the hero and hiss the villain. Disney adaptations of popular stories are also rich with Heroes & Villains.
